Far Far West Hellfire Map: Unlock Route and Volcano Risks
The volcanic region added in Frostburn is the game's hardest environment, and it is locked behind a treasure hunt in the Jungle rather than a level requirement.

How solid is this route
The gate — Arizona Jones in the Jungle, three temples, a map assembled from fragments — is corroborated by data-mined map records and multiple walkthroughs. The fragment counts (8 / 6 / 3) come from a single detailed source and will change if the temples are rebalanced. Some outlets attribute the gate to Ronsau's quests instead; both agree a quest chain is involved.
Hellfire is the only region Frostburn added, and the only map in the game that tries to kill you with the terrain as often as with enemies. It is also not unlocked by level, story progress, or currency. It is unlocked by finishing somebody else's archaeology.
The unlock chain, start to finish
Step 1 — Reach the Jungle. Hellfire cannot be started before the Jungle is open, which means finishing Trackman's three-quest chain in Far Far North. The full route is on /zones/jungle-unlock. If your map select lists no Jungle, stop here.
Step 2 — Find Arizona Jones in the Jungle. He offers the whole chain at once, listed as The Skull Temple, The Maze Temple, and The Trial Temple, with the Hellfire map as the reward. You select one quest at a time; he opens the portal.
Step 3 — Clear the three temples. Each temple hides map fragments. The reported split is 8 in the Skull Temple, 6 in the Maze Temple, 3 in the Trial Temple, for 17 total. Each fragment picked up updates an on-screen counter, so you always know what is missing.
Step 4 — Turn in and open the map. Once all three are handed in, Hellfire appears on map select. It does not require a specific difficulty clear.
One reported detail changes your prep: spells are disabled inside the temples, so your only sustain is what you carry — a Banjo or a healing item. Bring Dynamite; every temple reportedly hides a fragment behind a cracked wall.
Inside the temples: what actually kills you
| Temple | Reported obstacle | The mistake that ends runs |
|---|---|---|
| Skull | Lava gaps, a shooting gallery, timed gates with levers | Fighting instead of solving the lever loop |
| Maze | A literal walled maze, one fragment opens the maze door | Entering without clearing the surrounding enemies |
| Trial | The hardest gauntlet of the three | Arriving with no healing item |
The pattern is that the environment is the boss. Lava does not care about your damage build, and a timed gate does not care about your DPS. Slow, deliberate movement beats a fast clear.
Hellfire itself: the hazards
The map is built around a central volcano that erupts on a cycle, plus meteors that fall periodically across the playable area. Both are telegraphed rather than random, which means they are learnable — and lethal exactly once.
| Hazard | Behavior | Counterplay |
|---|---|---|
| Meteor falls | Periodic, area impact | Keep moving; do not hold a firing line |
| Volcano eruption | Central, timed, wide | Treat the center as temporary ground |
| Lava surfaces | Persistent damage | Route around; never fight with lava at your back |
| Trap corridors | Fixed, high damage | Walk, do not sprint, through tight sections |
| Heat and visual noise | Constant | Rely on audio cues for approaching threats |
This is the map that makes Shield Points matter. Cover is not reliable when the sky is falling, and the buffer you built before the eruption is the only defense that works during it. A squad that arrives with empty bars learns the lesson quickly — see /guide/shield-guide for how to keep them fed.
Fire loses value here for an obvious reason: you are standing in a furnace, and the enemies are at home in it. Frost is the better assignment, both for the freeze and for the shield it generates. Acid still primes, Voodoo still amplifies, but a pure Fire loadout is fighting the map's own element.
The hidden secret, and why it is worth the trip
Hellfire's secret is a delivery quest with a very recognizable inspiration: find a ring, carry it across the map, and destroy it in the volcano.
- Find the ring inside a small dungeon in the northern / north-eastern part of the map. Traps guard the approach; listen for them.
- Carrying it applies a black-and-white visual filter and does not make you invisible or invulnerable. Enemies still attack normally.
- If you drop it, it stays on the ground labeled "The Precious" and can be picked back up.
- At the volcano, use Dynamite to blow open the blocked passage, then climb. Bring a second stick — there is a second wall, and the backup box is a detour to the right.
- Drop the ring into the lava. Reported rewards: the Precious Rush Joker (a chance for a speed-boosting ring to spawn on enemy death) and 30 Uranium.
Two independent walkthroughs describe this route the same way, including the second dynamite wall, which is the detail that separates a real guide from a guess. The reward itself is modest — but 30 Uranium is 30 Uranium, and anything left over converts to XP at extraction.
Who should bring a Hellfire group
Bring: a Frost or shield anchor, one melee player to hold space during eruptions, someone with vertical mobility (Lasso flight, Bridge paths), and a healer or Banjo carrier.
Leave behind: pure Fire builds, snipers who need a stable perch, and anyone who has not cleared the Jungle temples — they cannot enter anyway.
Difficulty: treat Hellfire as a step above the region you unlocked it from. Its damage is largely environmental, so it punishes low health more than low damage. If meteors are killing you rather than enemies, the fix is hero upgrades, not a new gun. See /weapons/weapon-upgrades-guide.
Ronsau's three quests
Hellfire also hosts a three-part questline from Ronsau, a self-declared herald of darkness, rewarding the Ronsau skin. The reported objectives are a sacrificial ritual, a climb to collect a book, and activating valves to wake the volcano — the only quest in the game where triggering the map's own hazard is the goal.
For the rest of the map economy — what to run, what to skip — see /bounties/bounty-types and /guide/bounty-hunting-guide. Boss contracts on a lava map are their own problem; /bounties/boss-fights covers the patterns.
The short version
Unlock the Jungle first, then run Arizona Jones's three temples for 17 fragments. Bring healing items and dynamite, because spells reportedly stop working inside. On the map, keep moving, keep your shield fed, and never fight with lava behind you. The secret is a ring, two walls, and a very long walk.
Do I need to beat the game to unlock Hellfire?
No. It is gated behind the Jungle, which is gated behind Far Far North and Trackman's quests. There is no level requirement and no final-boss check — just the quest chain and the fragments.
Are spells really disabled in the temples?
Reported by one detailed walkthrough and consistent with the temples' design as item-only gauntlets. Test it on your first portal: if your spell bar is greyed out, plan around healing items for the rest of the chain.
Is Hellfire worth farming?
For Uranium and the graves, yes. For a relaxing evening, no. Environmental damage makes it the least forgiving map in the game, at rewards comparable to easier regions.
How many graves are in Hellfire?
Six, according to data-mined map records. They count toward the Gravekeeper skin's 30-grave requirement, which is covered on /unlockables/skins.
